Our Fragrance Expert Reveals All

It’s second nature to dab on our fragrances in the mornings, but are we really getting the most out of our precious signature scents? Luckily, our in-house Fragrance Expert, Marie Edmond, is on hand to unravel five common questions about scent from how to best apply it and where to store your bottle, so you can go forth and spritz with absolute confidence.

1.Should You Rub Fragrance Into Your Skin?

As one of the biggest beauty myths, there are two schools of thought on this. Some experts say that it helps increase the hook of the fragrance, while others claim that it breaks the molecules, making the perfume fade quicker. I’m in the second camp – rubbing doesn’t increase the scent but actually disturbs the top notes. You should let the perfume unfurl naturally on your skin.

2.Dabbing, Air Spraying Or Roll-On – Which Gives A Stronger Scent?

Fragrance blooms at its best when spritzed directly on dry skin and especially on your pulse points, such as your wrists and neck. This is because they’re the warmest parts of your body and help diffuse the scent. Explore our tips for layering fragrance with clothes during the cooler season.

3.Are Fragrances Gendered?

While some fragrance families were traditionally created for men and women, for example, woody matched with masculine and floral with feminine tastes, scent is for everyone. The types of perfumes you’re drawn to is a deeply personal part of your story. The same goes for day and evening scents – while an Eau de Toilette is a lighter choice suited for day wear, an Eau de Parfum can be a richer option for night, but it’s all down to you. Be free to pick whatever you love.

4.Why Does The Same Fragrance Smell Different On Me Than On Other People?

Fragrance transforms as soon as the first spritz; the light top notes come first, followed by the richer heart notes after a few hours. The base is the final, lingering scent trail – so it’s important to test a fragrance for a day to see if it suits you. Fragrance also reacts differently on others as they have their own natural skin scent and pH balance. Plus, you can be too familiar with your favourite perfume you might not smell it anymore – don’t panic, this is completely normal – your signature scent is as beautiful as ever.

5.Do Fragrances Expire?

Yes, they certainly do. Fragrance can oxidize; some faster than others based on their composition. That’s why we should keep them in a dry, cool space away from sunlight and at a consistent temperature.
