How To Use A Body Scrub
For A Skin Glow Like No Other
At Molton Brown, we curate all-encompassing sensorial luxury experiences, from our wind down routines to our bathroom spa transformations. Part of that is prioritising self-care and caring for your skin. How to do that? Via our Body Scrubs.
But how do you choose the right one? What are the benefits of a good Body Scrub? And at what stage in your bathing routine should you use it? To help with the details, we’ve contacted the experts straight from our in-house lab to help you get smooth, soft and silky skin that lasts.
What Is A Body Scrub?
So, what does a Body Scrub do and why are they an important step in your skin care? Body Scrubs “leave your skin feeling smooth and rejuvenated” according to our Junior Cosmetic Scientist, Jaime Radley. She goes on to say that “each of [Molton Brown’s] body polishers contain not only scrub particles, but also moisturising agents to help the skin feel renewed.”
Common ingredients include exfoliating grains, such as sugar and salt. At MB, we go one step further with our bamboo stem particles, orange peel and apricot kernels, which impart rich minerals and fast-absorbing oils. This means post-exfoliation your skin feels nourished and “will be prepped for moisturiser, oil or serums,” says Cosmetic Scientist, Monica Fam.

How To Use A Body Scrub – Your Step-By-Step Guide
Here’s your new go-to ‘everything’ shower routine – when paired with our full fragrance collection (candles and all) it’s a ritual more akin to a scented spa day than your typical morning dash.
- Soak skin in warm water to open the pores
- Use a generous amount of our Bath & Shower Gel to cleanse skin first
- Take a handful of our Body Scrub and apply across your torso, arms and legs
- Gently massage for 30 seconds to one minute
- Rinse thoroughly and apply our argan oil-infused Bath Oils for an extra dose of hydration
- Complete the rest of your shower routine and pat dry when finished
- Apply your favourite MB Body Oil and Body Lotion
Jaime suggests “layering your routine by using a lotion in the same or a similar fragrance after exfoliating to leave your skin feeling extra smooth whilst creating long-lasting scent.”
How Often Should You Use A Body Scrub?
Consistency is key with any new routine. Our Laboratory Technician, Sonya Smith recommends “once or twice a week”, adding that “some people may notice an improvement in their skin’s texture and appearance within a few days, while others may not see results for several weeks.”
What Are The Benefits Of Using A Body Scrub?
According to our experts, Body Scrubs are a not-so-well-kept secret for improving the skin. Here’s how:
- Smooths skin texture and appearance
- Helps prevent ingrown hairs
- Unclogs pores
- Improves circulation
- Leaves skin feeling renewed
Body Scrub Mistakes To Avoid
It’s important to be gentle – especially if you have any sensitivities. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, listen to your body’s cues and adapt each element of your routine to fit your skin type and needs. As Sonya warns, “over exfoliating can lead to dry, flaky skin. If you notice patches or flakes after exfoliating, cut things back as it can strip away the healthy skin cells and oil.”
Choosing The Right Body Scrub For Your Skin Type
Jaime runs through our luxury MB scrubs:
Re-charge Black Pepper Bodyscrub Bar “For a more comprehensive scrub I recommend this bar – not only will it leave you feeling exfoliated, but the high foaming formula will also help you feel clean and fresh, especially with the long-lasting scent of Re-charge Black Pepper.”
Fiery Pink Pepper Pampering Body Polisher “For a gentler scrub, I suggest our woody classic – the scrub particles are gentler than sugar but will still leave your skin feeling fresh. “
Orange & Bergamot Radiant Body Polisher “This one is a great middle ground. I personally love to gift this scrub along with Orange & Bergamot Bath & Shower Gel. It makes a beautiful set to give to someone who deserves a little bit of a pamper.”
Body Scrub FAQs
Do you use Body Scrub before or after body wash? After – Cosmetic Scientist Monica Fam reminds us that “by cleansing first you help remove dirt, sweat and oil, along with any makeup remnants off the skins surface.” This means you work with a clean base “to then exfoliate away dead skin cells that can pile up on skin’s surface and get rid of even deeper pore debris.”
Do you use Body Scrub on dry or wet skin? Wet skin – using warm water will also help to open your pores and soften the skin for exfoliation.
Should you wash your body after Body Scrub? Make sure to rinse your body carefully to remove any dead skin cells or excess scrub particles. We recommend using our deeply cleansing and expertly fragranced Bath & Shower Gels, which also help lock in your signature scent.
How long should you let Body Scrub sit? Gently massage the skin for 30 seconds to one minute.
Can Body Scrub be used on the face? “As the particles are fine and course, they can be hazardous to eyes. We advise finding a specific face scrub that has been formulated with softer and more spherical exfoliating particles,” recommends Raj Gabbi, Senior Cosmetic Science Manager.
Should I shave or exfoliate first? If you prefer to shave, exfoliating first will help create a smoother canvas.
Are Body Scrubs good for you? Yes. Sonya puts it perfectly when she says with regular use of a Body Scrub “skin is smoother, more even, and softer. Improves the circulation. Helps prevent ingrown hairs. Reduce the appearance of cellulite. Unclog pores and leaves skin feeling fresher and vitalised.”
All set for your at-home spa day? With our helpful skin tips and luxury exfoliating scrubs, you can bring that stress-relieving spa experience to your own bathroom and truly revel in the relaxation – you deserve it.
